logo_64Www.elderlore.com is a website about roguelike conception, from the first idea to the final publication, by way of development stages, feedback and savage debugging. Here you will follow my games progress, but also those of the whole community with Planet Roguelike, a feed aggregator of the english roguelikes blogosphere.

On the digital road

Personally, I work as a IT project leader in a french insurance company, and I manage IT architectural workings. I used to be a Windows server system administrator. As you can guess I don’t practice my programming skills at work, but personally I’ve been fond of computers since I was a teen. I have learn Basic 20 years ago on Alice, then Turbo Pascal at my secondary school computing club, and now Python is the langage I am fond of!

I have discovered my first roguelike about ten years ago on a Mandrake distribution I had installed at home: the name was NetHack. I quickly passed to Angband, more precisely ZAngbandTk, on which I spent countless evenings; whitout even winning once… To be fair, my best game was lost because of a corrupted savegame!

Tometik and Pousse Rapière

Then I discovered Tome, built from Angband and J.R.R. Tolkien world, which quickly seduced me and made me want to cross the miror. So I coded a patch in C, TomeTik, in order to add ZAngbandTk graphics to Tome, and launched Pousse Rapière, a website to describe my patch modifications and to provide D Gervais tiles in an online library.

By the allmighty eldercode

Using free (libre) software is important to me; when I code, choose media content, or publish progress on this blog, I try to use free (libre) software as much as I can.

Openness and interoperability are two very strong principles that, to my point of view, will revolutionize not only computing of the future, but also our relationship to human knowledge and how we should manage it.

Here is what I try to do at my modest scale: build virtual, openned and infinite worlds, whose power is not shortened by some protected piece of code or by a limited description. Their building principle is meant to be simple and openned: it is a simple algorithm, a mathematical forumla that cannot be licensed because it belongs to everyone. The result, nonetheless formalized by known starting conditions, can be of tremendous richness.
